What Is Core Sleep? The Apple Watch Label, Explained Properly
On your sleep tracker, "core sleep" is Apple’s name for light NREM sleep — stages N1 and N2 — and it is supposed to be most of your night. Here is what core sleep actually does, how much is normal, whether "more deep, less core" is worth chasing, and what the numbers can and cannot tell you.

Where the word comes from
Apple needed a friendlier label than "N1/N2" when the Apple Watch began staging sleep, and chose "core" — a nod to the fact that this stage makes up the core of the night. (Confusingly, sleep researchers have historically used "core sleep" differently — for the essential first chunk of the night containing most deep sleep. What actually happens during core sleep
A normal night cycles through light NREM → deep NREM → REM, roughly every 90 minutes. Core/light sleep is the connective tissue of the whole architecture: N1 is the brief drifting-off gateway (a few minutes at a time), and N2 — the bulk of core — is where the brain runs two signature events. Sleep spindles, short bursts of fast activity, are strongly linked to memory consolidation — the filing of what you learned today — and appear to help gate out noise so you stay asleep. K-complexes, big slow waves fired in response to sounds, are the brain actively suppressing wake-ups. "Light" sleep, in other words, is not shallow filler between the good stages; it is working sleep, and you are built to spend about half the night in it.
How much core sleep is normal?
For adults, roughly: core/light 45–60% of the night, deep (N3) 13–23%, REM 20–25%. On eight hours, that is about four to five hours of core — so the big number that worried you this morning is the textbook pattern. Deep sleep also concentrates in the first half of the night and declines naturally with age; a 55-year-old comparing deep-sleep percentages with their 25-year-old kid is comparing different physiology, not different discipline.
Before you optimize: the tracker caveat
A wrist device does not measure brain waves; it infers stages from movement, heart rate and heart-rate variability. Validation studies consistently find consumer trackers good at detecting sleep vs wake, decent at total sleep time, and mediocre at exact stage boundaries — light-vs-deep is precisely where they blur most. Use the app for trends across weeks ("my deep sleep drops every time I drink late") and ignore single nights. A bad "score" after a night you felt fine is noise; how you feel by mid-morning outranks the pie chart.
Can you improve the mix?
You cannot order the brain to file more N3 — staging is automatic. What you can do is remove the things that suppress deep sleep and fragment core sleep, and the levers are unglamorous: a regular schedule (the single biggest one — deep sleep is scheduled by your circadian clock, and a chaotic bedtime scatters it); alcohol earlier or not at all (it is the most reliable deep-sleep suppressant most people use); a cool, genuinely dark room; caffeine before noon; and a steady soundscape — because every micro-arousal from a door, a snore or a scooter outside chips sleep back into lighter stages, and a continuous quiet bed of sound masks exactly those spikes. On a 7–9 hour night, entirely normal — light/core sleep should be roughly half your total. Judge the night by total sleep time and how you feel, not by the size of the core slice.
Is core sleep the same as deep sleep?
No. Core is Apple’s label for light NREM (N1+N2); deep sleep is N3, shown separately. Both matter — core carries memory-filing spindles and keeps you asleep through noise; deep does physical restoration and appears mostly in the first half of the night.
Why is almost all my sleep core sleep?
